Guatemala Las Cuevitas
An importer that we've worked with for a very long time put a sample of this coffee in front of us as a potential blender. We like to do this blind with little or no information about the coffee, including origin and price. After sample roasting and cupping several times we thought it would be a possible fit for a blend we were working on. But it also tasted pretty delicious as is. It had some nice fruit and balanced acidity. Just a clean coffee. The stuff we look for in the cup. Here's where it gets weird. This is the point where we ask for all the information. Things like farm, lot, producer, region, altitude, post harvest processing and of course cost. They had little to no information. They bought it from another importer-and before you get conspiratorial-this wasn't some back alley sort of deal. The original roaster broke the contract and apparently closed their doors. Sad to say, this year will be tough on a lot of roasters. Here's what I could find based on bag markings.
"Las Cuevitas coffee from Guatemala's Villaure region, particularly those from the Cuevitas farm within the Huehuetenango region, are known for their distinct flavor profiles. Specifically, a fully washed version from Cuevitas has sweet, rich caramel notes with subtle baking spice, apple, and dried apricot undertones. The Cuevitas farm is located at 1,500-1,700 meters elevation and is run by a third-generation producer."
